Platinum-based catalysts are used to oxidize CO [7] and HC [5] and to achieve the performance and durability required. Generally catalyst formulations have platinum in a highly dispersed form [17]. When the engine is started, the catalyst is insufficiently warm to oxidize the hydrocarbons initially present in the exhaust gas.
