Sparfloxacin Antacids

Concurrent treatment with antacids reduces the oral absorption of many quinolones, such as ciprofloxacin and enoxacin (127), moxifloxacin (16), norfloxacin (128), ofloxacin (129), and sparfloxacin (130). [Pg.1402]

The absorption of sparfloxacin is impaired by antacids containing aluminium or magnesium (19). In an open, single-dose (400 mg), randomized, four-way crossover study in 20 male volunteers (aged 18-38 years), Maalox (30 ml) given 4 hours after sparfloxacin did not cause a statistically significant reduction in the rate and extent of sparfloxacin absorption. In contrast, Maalox given 2 hours before or 2 hours after sparfloxacin did reduce its absorption AUC fell by 23 and 17% respectively and mean C ax by 29 and 13% (20). [Pg.3173]
