The Southern Literary Messenger, for instance, reviewed works critical of slavery such as Harriet Martineau s Society in America (3 [November 1837] 641—657), and noticed other antislavery texts, including Lydia Maria Childs, Appeal in Favor of That Class of Americans Called Africans (i [July 1835] 651). [Pg.111]

Kennedy recommends that Poe begin contributing to the Southern Literary Messenger and encourages its proprietor, Thomas W. White, to hire Poe in an editorial capacity. [Pg.284]
