Solvent effects Space groups

A benchmark study on the effect of solvent on growth of polar crystals was carried out by Wells (42) in 1949. He found that in aqueous solution at room temperature the ot-form of resorcinol (space group Pna2t), 12a, grows unidi-rectionally along the polar c axis. The crystal exhibits benzene-rich 011 faces Sit one end of the c axis and O(hydroxyl)-rich OlT faces at the other end... [Pg.68]

Even with these limitations, nuclear magnetic resonance has made significant contributions to four areas of the chemistry of the platinum group metals bonding problems, molecular stereochemistry, solvation and solvent effects, and dynamic systems—reaction rates. Selected examples in each of these areas are discussed in turn. Because of space limitations, this review is not meant to be comprehensive. [Pg.99]

In a study of the conformational statistics of PS, Yoon, Sundararajan and Flory (YSF) included solvent effects in the analysis [47]. The influence of solvent on conformational energy is important because the distance between chemical groups separated by four bonds is large enough for solvent molecules to penetrate the space between them and provide additional interactions. These results are in complete agreement with the experimental studies of PS conformational structure. For example, YSF found the g rotational states to be insignificant due to severe steric interactions. In addition, the inclusion of solvent effects led to the conclusion that the tt conformation is not the ground state of the meso dyad. [Pg.567]
