Etidronate sodium

Chelants at concentrations of 0.1 to 0.2% improve the oxidative stabiUty through the complexation of the trace metal ions, eg, iron, which cataly2e the oxidative processes. Examples of the chelants commonly used are pentasodium diethylenetriarninepentaacetic acid (DTPA), tetrasodium ethylenediarninetetraacetic acid (EDTA), sodium etidronate (EHDP), and citric acid. Magnesium siUcate, formed in wet soap through the reaction of magnesium and siUcate ions, is another chelant commonly used in simple soap bars. 

The effect of high-dose inhaled glucocorticoids and anti-resorptive therapy with sodium etidronate has been studied for 18 months in 38 Chinese patients (24 men and 14 premenopausal women aged 30-50 years), of whom 28 were asthmatics who had already been treated for at least 12 months with high-dose inhaled glucocorticoids (beclo-methasone or budesonide over 1.5 mg/day), and 10 healthy controls (129). A number of agents are now available for the treatment of Paget s disease, including mithramycin (R36), a low phosphate and high calcium regime (E18), sodium etidronate (K18), and the various calcitonins (A21, H4, M9, P17, S44, S74). Each treatment schedule has been assessed by its effect on serum alkaline phosphatase values, but these do not correlate well with clinical improvement (P17).
