Soddy’s rule

As a specific example, the uranium atom (atomic number 92) emitted an alpha particle and the atomic number of what was left of the atom therefore became 90, by Soddy s rule. This meant that a thorium atom had been formed. However, whereas ordinary thorium had a half-life of 14 billion years, the thorium produced from uranium had a half-life of 24 days. [Pg.232]
