So-called metal-support interaction

Second, we shall present our approach as to how to probe the palladium surfaces in more complex Pd/support catalysts, especially when the so-called metal-support interactions are expected. We shall develop our idea of how to use such chemical probes as a catalytic reaction (alkane catalytic conversion) or chemisorption in order to see important changes in the catalytic behavior. When possible, an adequate reference to available data from more sophisticated physical techniques is made. 

A great variety of oxides can be used as supports. These materials are chemically stable, but in some cases, interactions between the metallic particles and the support can occur. Thus, in the particular case of metal catalysts supported on some reducible oxides, the occurrence of so-called metal-support interaction effects has been reported. " " In order to minimize the metal-support interaction, stable oxides (not reducible), such as alumina or silica, are used. Moreover, the size-dependent electronic, structural, and chemical properties of metal nanoparticles on oxide supports are an important aspect of heterogeneous catalysis. " " ... 

One of the most problematic questions in heterogeneous catalysis is the cooperative effect of different phases present in a given catalytic system and, in particular, the so-called metal-support interaction [15]. In the case of gold catalysis, interaction of the metal with an oxidic support seems to be of fundamental importance in determining the extraordinary reactivity observed during the low temperature oxidation of CO [14].
