Smectic reactive mesogens

Clearly, the ability of the smectic phase to control biradical reactivity is greatest when the length of the solute is very similar to that of the mesogen. When this is the case, solute-induced disruption of solvent-packing within the smectic phase is minimized and as a result, the effects of solvent order on the relative kinetic behavior of the cisoid and transoid biradical intermediates are maximized. [Pg.487]

Larger differences were found for the more highly ordered smectic phases, and for ketones bearing substituents which mimic the structure of the mesogen. From an analysis of the results of a number of studies, it was concluded that the effects observed were the result of the solvent s ability to alter the equilibrium constant for trans/ gauche interconversion in favour of the nonquenching tra 5-conformer. These studies included a careful determination of the solubility limits of each solute in the various phases by deuterium nmr spectroscopy and thus also provide several clear examples of the effects and complexities of biphasic solubilization on solute reactivity. [Pg.886]

LCEs forming nematic, cholesteric, and smectic phases have been synthesized, with various chemical structures comprising of both side-chain and main-chain types. Because of the multitudes of preparation techniques, I will here focus on our synthetic methods [7]. Reactive cyanobiphenyl monoacrylate mesogens were mixed with diacrylate cross-linkers to produce a photoinitiated side-chain acrylate NE (Fig. 10.2). As it will be described later, the LCE fixes the liquid crystal orientation at the time of cross-linking, and it can be said that this orientation... [Pg.304]
