Small molecule conversion, complexes

Transition metal complexes have been used as catalysts in photochemical conversions of CO2 since they can absorb a significant part of the solar spectrum, have long-lived excited states, and can promote the activation of small molecules. Co complexes with N-macrocycles and Ru(bpy)2(CO)X complexes (X=CO, Cl, H) have shown quite interesting activity [147]. 

From a purely biological perspective, data analysis of small molecules and natural product screening differ only slightly. Certain screen formats such as enzyme-based screens are vulnerable to interference by extracts and can exhibit high false positive rates. The ability to flag troublesome extracts is vital to allow the identification of genuine active samples. Conversely, the identification of false negatives is afflicted by the very complex natures of natural products due to their inherent properties and extraction methods. 

This section describes the properties of [M(L)(S )J complexes in which L represents various small molecules. The NO complexes, for example, are considered important intermediates in many reactions, ranging from waste water purifications to the bacterial nitrate-ammonia or nitrate-dinitrogen conversion or the mammalian bioregulation, in which NO acts as neurotransmitter (99-104).

The driving force for condensation is the removal of the small-molecule side product. Most condensation processes are reversible and readily establish complex equilibria. Only when the water, for example, is removed from the system can high conversions to cyclic oligomers or long-chain polymers be achieved.
