Small molecular analysis

Usually, tissue blocks are held by an optimum cutting temperature (OCT) polymer, but tissues should not be embedded into such polymer reagent because any residual polymer on the tissue slices degrade the mass spectra for both protein and small molecular analysis [10] (see Note 1). 

We focus the following discussion on analysis techniques for small molecular entities. The reader should be aware that there are also a number of solutions for analytical tools that are useful for fast HPLC, GPC, or even DSC. The classification principles that apply for these techniques are the same as for the analytical tools described in this chapter. 

Because the vast majority of the sedimentary organic compounds are not amenable to direct study by current analytical techniques, organic geochemists rely on operational approaches to characterize them, such as measuring the %OC, %ON, OC/ON ratio and humin content.
