The rather constant fractionation of Sm/Nd ratios in upper continental cmstal rock reservoirs is the basis for the widely applied neodymium model age that is illustrated in Figure 3. The Sm-Nd systematics of chondritic meteorites serve as a reference for the parent/daughter ratio of the undifferentiated Earth (Jacobsen and Wasserburg, 1984), labeled as CHUR for chondritic uniform reservoir. The evolution of this undifferentiated Earth is the basis for calculation of CHUR model ages (McCulloch and Wasserburg, 1978), while the neodymium isotopic evolution of the depleted upper part of the mantle is a more valid reference for most cmstal materials, resulting in the DM model age (DePaolo, 1981). Neodymium isotopic compositions are usually given by s d, where the deviations of Nd/ Nd above or below... [Pg.1592]

Th-U-Pb systematics and Sm-Nd systematics address in part different aspects of Earth differentiation. First, Th/Pb and U/Pb ratios are affected by core formation, whereas the Sm/Nd ratio is not. Second, in the silicate Earth Th/Pb... [Pg.263]

The Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd systematics of six samples analyzed by Hergt et al. (1989b) scatter widely in Fig. 13.37 and do not converge to their respective Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd isochrons. Nevertheless, three samples do form a Rb-Sr errorchron in part A that yields a date of 169 16 Ma and an initial Sr/ Sr ratio of 0.70988 0.00010 (ct). The other samples in this set scatter widely, probably because their Rb/Sr ratios were altered and not because the magma from which they formed had a range of different isotope compositions of strontium. Although this conjecture needs to be tested, we prefer to base conclusions about petrogenesis only on the intercepts of errorchron or isochron lines. [Pg.438]
