Slaves profession

The descendants of slaves, along with many other minorities in the United States, have had an historical, and to some extent continuing, experience of oppression and discrimination. The scientific and medical professions participated in that experience. The "scientific racism" of the nineteenth century predated the (re)discovery of genetics in 1900 one could date it at least to Linnaeus eighteenth-century classification of humans into four subspecies with its assignment of superiority to his own European subspecies. When the science of genetics arrived with the twentieth century, genetic explanations were quickly advanced for the perceived inferiority of minorities. 

Certainly, if mining is a shameful and discreditable employment for a gentleman because slaves once worked mines, then agriculture also will not be a very creditable employment, because slaves once cultivated the fields, and even to-day do so among the Turks nor will architecture be considered honest, because some slaves have been found skilful in that profession nor medicine because not a few doctors have been slaves. ... 

If we glance at the state of the world today we see first of all that in Europe the principles of the French constitution are already those of all enlightened men. We see them too widely propagated, too seriously professed, for priests and despots to prevent their gradual penetration even into the hovels of their slaves there they will soon awaken in these slaves the remnants of their common sense and inspire them with that smouldering indignation which not even constant humiliation and fear can smother in the soul of the oppressed. 

The African diaspora is defined to include peoples of sub-Saharan ancestral origins on the continent of Africa, the Caribbean, the Americas, and worldwide. This diaspora began to emerge with the advent of the slave trade in the 1500s. Over the centuries, people of African ancestry have been able to enter other professions such as theology, law, social services, and business. However, engineering as a profession of choice and pursuit for people of African ancestry has been underrepresented than these other professions.
