In 1785 Jay founded and served as first president of the New York Society for Promoting the Manumission of Slaves on whose board of directors Hamilton also sat. Later, as Governor of New York, Jay signed a bill (April 1799) to emancipate slaves. See DC, vol. i, P 1015. [Pg.615]
