Sir Francis Beaufort

The Beaufort Wind Scale was devised by British Rear-Admiral Sir Francis Beaufort in 1805 based on observations of the effects of the wind. 

Beaufort wind scale Ascaleofwind speed that was devised in the early 19th century by Rear Admiral Sir Francis Beaufort (1774-1857). Originally based on observations of the effect of various wind speeds on the sails of a full-rigged frigate, it has since been modified and is now based on observations of the sea surface or, on land, such easily observable indicators as smoke and tree movement. The scale ranges from 0 (calm) to 12 (hurricane).
