Several experimental parameters have been used to describe the conformation of a polymer adsorbed at the solid-solution interface these include the thickness of the adsorbed layer (photon correlation spectroscopy(J ) (p.c.s.), small angle neutron scattering (2) (s.a.n.s.), ellipsometry (3) and force-distance measurements between adsorbed layers (A), and the surface bound fraction (e.s.r. (5), n.m.r. ( 6), calorimetry (7) and i.r. (8)). However, it is very difficult to describe the adsorbed layer with a single parameter and ideally the segment density profile of the adsorbed chain is required. Recently s.a.n.s. (9) has been used to obtain segment density profiles for polyethylene oxide (PEO) and partially hydrolysed polyvinyl alcohol adsorbed on polystyrene latex. For PEO, two types of system were examined one where the chains were terminally-anchored and the other where the polymer was physically adsorbed from solution. The profiles for these two... [Pg.147]

Recently, a low-resolution model of the chromatin core particle has been derived from a combination of single-crystal X-ray diffraction and electron microscopic data (Finch et al., 1977). The particle is described as a flat cylinder 110 A in diameter and 57 A in height. A similar shape and similar dimensions were found to be consistent with the low-angle neutron scattering from core particles in solution (Pardon et al., 1977 Suau et al., 1977). Some conclusions may be drawn concerning the conformation of the DNA. Presumably, the strong 28 A periodicity apparent in the crystal data (Finch et al., 1977) corresponds to the pitch of the DNA superhelix wound about the histone core. X-Ray and spectroscopic data suggest that the DNA super-... [Pg.4]

It is not possible to discuss all the methods available for characterizing foods critically and systematically in a single volume. Methods pertaining to interfaces (food emulsions, foams, and dispersions), fluorescence, ultrasonics, nuclear magnetic resonance, electron spin resonance, Fourier-transform infrared and near infrared spectroscopy, small-angle neutron scattering, dielectrics, microscopy, rheology, sensors, antibodies, flavor and aroma analysis are included. [Pg.458]

Small-Angle Neutron Scattering - Single Chain Information. [Pg.471]

Many LLDPE are compositionally heterogeneous, since they contain molecules with few branches and molecules that are highly branched. The more highly branched fraction can be separated by solvent extraction. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) has confirmed the prediction that stmcturally disperse LLDPE display liquid-liquid phase separation, even if the overall branch content is low. These LLDPE behave like polyethylene blends even though they are the result of a single polymerization. [Pg.68]
