Silk flags

The deteriorated condition of historic silk flags appears not generally to be the result of weighting with inorganic substances. None of the samples studied showed evidence of weighting with inorganic material. [Pg.141]

A group of thirty-four silk samples taken from fourteen brittle Civil War flags was provided by the Capitol Preservation Committee, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. [Pg.134]

The wide variety and variability of elements detected for Identically colored silks suggests, as previously observed, that the methods of coloring these historical flags was not standardized. [Pg.138]

On another Civil War flag we were not so successful. This flag was intact enough that it needed only to be lined with a thin silk. Because it was so nearly intact, however, and the fabric between the seams had stretched and sagged, it could not be made to lie flat. We were unaware of the problem since it was possible to iron the flag by hand, leaving a... [Pg.190]

The wide variety and variability of elements detected for identically colored silks immediately suggested that the methods of coloring these historical flags were not at all standardized. Of the three blue specimens, two contained iron, one did not. Of the three red samples, one contained iron, one contained both iron and tin, and one contained neither iron nor tin. The cream samples showed four with iron, one with tin, and three with neither iron nor tin. [Pg.412]

At the end of this procedure, the catheter needs to be secured externally. We prefer an external fixation device (adhesive disc) to secure the catheter. An adhesive cloth tape is wound around the catheter like a flag, a few centimeters from the disc. A 2/0 silk suture is then used to take sutures on the external disc and firmly tied along the length of the adhesive... [Pg.5]
