The ratio of the axonal diameter divided by the diameter of the axon plus its myelin sheath is referred to as the G-ratio. Usually, the G-ratio is maintained betw een 0.6 and 0.7. The importance of this constancy lays in the fact that thickness of myelin w raps depend on axonal thickness and demonstrate propor-tionahty. One of the main regulators of the myelin thickness is signal(s) induced by Neuregulin-ErbB system (Michailov et al., 2004). Adchtionally, neurotrophins likeBDNF andneu-rotrophin p75 are also thought to be involved in regulating myelin sheath thickness (Tolw ani et al., 2004).
