Siegel, Martin, Explaining Risk to the Public, Chemical Engineering Progress, May 1989, New York, p. 20. [Pg.21]

When people feel they are not given choices, they become angry. When communities feel coerced into accepting risks, they feel furious about the coercion, not necessarily the risk. Ultimately the risk is then viewed as a serious hazard. To exemplify the distinction, Martin Siegel [26] writes that to drag someone to a mountain and tie boards to his feet and push him downhill would be considered unacceptably outrageous. Invite that same individual to a ski trip and the picture could change drastically. [Pg.6]

Martin Blume expressed relief by this statement, to which Siegel replied, 1 love the fact that [PLoS is] an organization of 25 people, and that 1 can say something like that and relieve Marty Blume, who has a much larger operation. ... [Pg.40]

The cross-linking process requires lysyl oxidase, which converts lysyl residues into allysine (Pinnell and Martin, 1968 Siegel et al, 1970), Recently, O Dell at al, (1976a) presented experimental results that indicate that lysyl oxidase activity is important for normal development of lung tissue. [Pg.125]
