Shrinkage desorption

The moisture content of the paper has a strong effect on the folding endurance test. The swelling and shrinkage which accompany adsorption and desorption of water vapor cause shifting and rearrangement of... [Pg.284]

It follows that the gain or loss of water or other liquids or vapors into or out of wood tissue can be influenced greatly by the nature, amount, and distribution of wood polysaccharides. As will be discussed in Chapter 3, these same sorption phenomena (i.e., adsorption and desorption), together with the architectural arrangement of wood cells in the tree, are responsible for particular patterns in wood swelling and shrinkage when wood is subjected to various environments. The arrangement of polysaccharide molecules within the cell wall itself, especially that of the cellulose, also has a profound effect on the physical and mechanical properties of individual cells and wood as a whole. [Pg.7]

Thus, the cooperative character of the conformational rearrangement of hypercrosshnked networks causes a certain time lag in the expansion and shrinkage of the bead and explains the imusually strong hysteresis in the sorption—desorption kinetics. Generally, hypercros-slinked polystyrene sorbents display superb adsorption capacity, combined with high and steadily growing adsorption rates and very high desorption rates. [Pg.393]

Simultaneously as a result of water desorption a change of surface energy AF occurs, attributed to the paste shrinkage, shown in Figs. 5.45 and 5.46. The changes of surface energy are linked with compressive stress by the following formula ... [Pg.344]

The redox potentials of PXV-PSS complex were -0.50 V (the first wave), and -0.91 V (the second wave), and those of PXV-Nafion complex were -0.53 V and -0.93 V, respectively. Compared with those of PXV alone, that of the first wave was shifted to the cathodic side by about 60 90 mV, and the second wave by about 20 40 mV. The potential shift seemed to be based on the difference of chemical environment of PXV. Namely, the redox behavior was supressed a little by the shrinkage of domain which was induced by the complexation. Shrinkage of the domain corresponded to the supression of the migration of microions. PXV-PSS complex was coated on the electrode and was soaked in 50 p M Ru(NH3)03 aqueous solution. By the repetitive cycling from +0.80 V to -0.80 V, the peak current i , corresponding to reduction of Ru(NH3)03 (Ep = -0.28 V vs. SSCE), increased. PXV-PSS complex coated electrode was completely saturated with Ru(NH3)0 when potential was fixed at -0.80 V for 10 min. The peak current was constant over an hour, namely no desorption was observed during the experiment. It was recognized that theoretical amount of Ru(NH3)0 was fixed in PXV-PSS complex domain. [Pg.438]

It has to be pointed out that the very same process that is observed during desorption upon nitrogen sorption analysis is active when using any other probe, for example when subcritically drying a sample [74, 75]. To use the same evaluation concept for drying shrinkage the fluid related quantities such as the surface tension and the relative pressure and the temperature have to be replaced in the above relationships. [Pg.482]

The weight loss in region I is due to the desorption of physically adsorbed water and alcohol. A very small shrinkage is observed and this occurs as a result of... [Pg.301]
