Short-term protecting groups

Chemoselectivity, for example, the differentiation between a ketone and an aldehyde, can in favorable cases be realized by capitalizing on the inherent reactivity of a specific functional group environment. Consider the conversion of 11 to 12 (Scheme 7.18). Traditionally, one tends to apply two short-term protecting groups to achieve the selective reduction of the keto function. [Pg.226]

In the short-term BHT supplementation experiment, it was found that no protection was obtained if BHT was added for only 1 or 2 weeks and then removed from the diet (2 weeks pre-carcinogen treatment). If it was continued for three weeks (to 1 week pre-carcinogen), only minimal protection was seen. If fed up to the time of DMBA-treatment or for one, two or three weeks post-carcinogen then removed, maximal protection was seen, comparable to the group that consumed BHT throughout the entire experimental period. These two... [Pg.146]
