The predominant limiting cases of bonding between the atoms of crystals can be classified as follows  

Since chemical bonding is restricted to electrons of the outer shell, the difference between the types of bonding can easily be presented schematically by showing the distribution of these electrons and the interaction between them. This is shown in Fig. 1-1 for the main types of bonding. It must be noted however that pure bond types are seldom observed.
