Depending on whether the bed is internally insulated or whether it is externally insulated we will have an additional sensible term that involves either the shell mass or the mass of the internal insulation. [Pg.293]

We can now calculate the shell mass, using the density of 304 stainless steel (= 8,000 kg/m, from Table 7.2). [Pg.322]

For the horizontal pressure vessel, we need to convert the volume into a length and diameter. Assuming that the vessel is a cylinder with Lc = 2D, then we can follow the same method as for the column and find = 8 mm and shell mass = 636 kg. [Pg.322]

This bond length reduction is not the least of the structural features specific to nanopartides. Both experiment and theory [92] revealed unusual symmetries such as icosahedral or polyicosahedral structures. Study of free iron dusters [93] confirmed a dramatic and irregular increase in the ionisation potential for particles with less than 30 atoms. Intermediate maxima around 15 atoms indicated lower stabihty in this size region corresponding to incomplete atomic shells. Mass spectra of Ni and Co dusters from 50 to 800atoms corresponded to icosahedral shell structures. [Pg.546]

The lumen and shell mass balances for individual fibres in the bundle are solved by dividing each fibre into N Weller-Steiner (Tase I stages along its length, as illustrated in Figure 16.1. [Pg.336]

The potential parameters for the water molecule were empirically fitted to reproduce the experimental dipole moment, 0-H bond length and H-O-H angle of the water monomer and the structure of the water dimer and infra-red data. Molecular dynamics simulations were then used to calculate the self-diffusion coefficient, radial distribution functions (RDFs) and energy of evaporation of liquid water. The computer code DL POLY 2.6 code (Forester and Smith 1995) was employed. We simulated a box containing 256 water molecules at a temperature of 300 K where the conditions were initially set at the experimental density of p= 1.0 g/cm and run with an NPT ensemble. We chose a mass for the oxygen shell of 0.2 a.u., which is small compared to the mass of the hydrogen atom of 1.0 a.u. However, due to the small shell mass we needed to run the MD simulation with the small timestep of 0.2 fs in order to keep the system stable. With this timestep we obtained data at constant pressure and temperature for a period of 100 picoseconds. [Pg.76]
