SETTLE method

Eroth flotation (qv) is the most important method for cleaning fine coal because very smak particles caimot be separated by settling methods. Air is passed through a suspension of coal in water to which conditioning reagents, usuaky special oils, have been added. The oils are selected so that the coal particles preferentiaky attach themselves to the bubbles and separate from the refuse that remains in suspension. [Pg.230]

The settling method is based on Stoke s law, which says that denser, and usually larger, particles sink farther than less dense or smaller particles. This method assumes that particles all have the same density and that they are spherical. [Pg.445]

Gravitational settling method is effective only for pollutant particle size larger than 50-100 microns. This method is suitable only for preliminary cleaning of gases. [Pg.311]

Cleaning using ultrasound is a relatively new method of gas cleaning and used very rarely at industrial scale. The degree of cleaning that can be achieved by this method is approximately the same as was shown for electrostatic settling methods. [Pg.315]

DiFTerential settling methods. Differential settling methods utilize the difference in terminal velocities that can exist between substances of different density. The density of the medium is less than that of either substance. The disadvantage of the method is that since the mixture of materials to be separated covers a range of particle sizes, the larger, light particles settle at the same rate as the smaller, heavy ones and a mixed fraction is obtained. [Pg.1050]

Finally, we make mention of a settling method that employs the fact that particles when settling in an inclined tube do so faster than if the tube is vertical. This effect is termed the Boycott effect, after the physician A.E. Boycott, who in 1920 made this observation in connection with the sedimentation of blood cells in a tube. A picture of batch sedimentation in an inclined channel is shown in Fig. 5.4.8. The clarified liquid, suspension, and sediment are modeled as three distinct regions separated by kinematic shocks, as in vertical settling. [Pg.169]

In cake filtration, where the surface volume diameter is of interest, methods for surface area determination are relevant (these measure only mean sizes) particularly, permeametry, gas diffusion and hindered settling methods. [Pg.54]

Plates painted with perchlorvinyl enamel were used as well as unpainted glass and steel surfaces. These were fixed in a holder in such a way as to allow the position of the samples relative to the axis of the flow to be varied the holder was placed at of the distance from the trough entrance. The samples were deposited in air by the free-settling method to a density of about 0.3 g/m. ... [Pg.256]

IV.2.1 Sizing vapor/liqutd separator by gravity settling method... [Pg.96]

Low shear process will produce larger liquid droplets (>30 microns), and heavy/light liquids can be separated using gravity settling method. Examples of low shear process are solvent extraction, mixer settlers, steam stripping, washing process, and counter-current tower. Coalescer pad can be used to speed up the liquid/liquid separation and reduce the separator size. [Pg.103]

Vessel sized for liquid surge drum and vapor/liquid separation by gravity settling method can be used for final design. Vessel siz for vapor/liquid separation by mist eliminator method should be checked by the mist eliminator vendor to confirm its size. Vessel sized for Hquid/liquid separation by surge volume method or with coalescer pad is a rough preliminary sizing. Its size should be checked by vendor or an expert. [Pg.105]

A completely different sedimentation process reverses the normal settling method by making the particles or droplets less dense than the suspending liquid, so that they float to the top of the liquid, from where they can be skinuned off as a thick... [Pg.457]
