only one substance from a mixture is needed, so it has to be separated from the mixture. Below are some ways of doing this. [Pg.18]

By filtering Chalk can be separated from water by filtering the suspension through filter paper. The chalk gets trapped in the filter paper while the water passes through it. The chalk is called the residue. The water is called the filtrate. [Pg.18]

By centrifuging A centrifuge is used to separate small amounts [Pg.18]

Before centrifuging, the solid is mixed all through the liquid. [Pg.18]

The liquid can be decanted (poured out) from the test-tubes, or removed with a small pipette. The solid is left behind. [Pg.18]
