Sensitization of the Photoeffect

Copper organoacetylenides were the first compounds in which the chemical and spectral sensitization of the inner photoeffect of the organic materials were [Pg.66]

Typical results are shown in Fig. 44. The spectral threshold of the proper photoconductivity and the photo-emf of PAC is situated at 520 nm. The spectral response for the photo emf of PAC itself is shown by curve 1. After PAC has been immersed in an ethanol solution of methylene blue and dried its spectral response is represented by curves 2 and 2. The photo-response appears in the range of the absorption maximum of the dye at 680 nm characteristic of the monomolecular form in the dilute initial solution (curve 3). The observed enhancement of the second maximum at 620 nm in comparison to the solution spectrum is obviously connected with the presence of dye dimers. The shift of the maximum photoresponse to the longer wavelength by 15 nm relatively to the solution is usually the case for the adsorbed state. The sign of the charge carriers both in the proper and sensitized spectra ranges is positive. As seen in Fig. 44 the adsorption of the dye also markedly changes the proper photosensitivity of the PAC. When the monomolecular form of the adsorbed dye dominates, the [Pg.67]

The optimum sensitization efficiency from 30 to 50% was observed at concentrations of dyes 10 3 M. The experimental data for photoconductivity of PAC sensitized by methylene blue are shown in Fig. 46. It is significant that a [Pg.68]

Sensitized photoconductivity of up to 1300 nm was demonstrated for PAC using various types of dyes [279]. The main features for infrared sensitizers were the same as for visual ones. [Pg.69]

As already shown, the sensitized spectra follow the dye absorption. Most of the dyes have sufficiently narrow absorption bands. This does not permit us to obtain the panchromatic sensitivity in the sufficiently broad spectral range. It was proposed to use the polymers with conjugated bonds as sensitizers [21]. The broad diffuse absorption spectra are inherent to such compounds. One can expect higher thermal stability from such sensitizers. In addition the application of binder may be omitted from the preparation of the photosensitive layers, for example, in electrophotography. Polymers with triple bonds, polyphenylenes and polyoxiphenylenes were used as sensitizers [10, 14, 278-280]. The typical results are shown in Fig. 47. The main rules for photoconductivity sensitized by polymers were the same as for the dyes. Optimum sensitization was obtained at the concentration of the sensitizer of 10 1-10-2 g/cm3 relative to the polymeric photoconductor weight. [Pg.69]
