If hydrogenation is conducted with excess of semicarbazide hydrochloride, after absorption of one equivalent of hydrogen the intermediate imine reacts with the nuclophilic species and yields the aldehyde semicarbazone [equation (b)]. Under selected reaction conditions, the semicarbazone is resistant to hydrogenation. In the presence of amines, reaction would lead to ketimines. ...
