Mass-separating agent one approach would be the addition of a selective com-plexing agent to a liquid phase to increase the solubility of a solute. An example would be the addition of a selective chelating agent to an organic phase which can complex with a metal ion in an aqueous phase when the two phases are contacted. 

New porphyrin-containing Group IVB polymers were made using ricinoleic acid215 or hematoporphine IX.210,217,218 Polymer 93 is a representative example that was used as a selective chelating agent. Macrocyclic tetrapyrrole has four methyl, two ethanolic, and two propionic acid side chains. The polymers are cross-linked because of the four reactive functions (two acid and two alcohol groups). The adsorption of Ni+2 by porphyrin moieties was observed for the titanium polymer. 

Polarographic analysis may also be used to determine the level of selected chelating agents incorporated in an adhesive formulation. In the case of EDTA-based chelators, a standard addition approach using copper(II) is preferred. The supporting electrolyte is ammonium acetate at pH 5.0. This approach takes advantage of the fact that metal-chelate are typically reduced at more negative potentials than the metals themselves.
