Selected Microscopic Illustrations of Phase Morphology in Nanocomposites 

After a slowdown of the activity due to the use of organic solvents to achieve exfoliation of the clay, the research success of Vaia et al. [15] in solvent-free melt exfoliation of mont-morillonite (MMT) clay directly in extruders led to a new boost in scientific and industrial competitions. 

The present introduction is not intended to review the huge amount of literature generated each year on nanocomposites. The reader interested in the full area is advised to consult the extensive review of the progress achieved in the field of nanocomposites till 2003, which has been published by Suprakas and Okamoto [16].
