Second director

Free phenols (as their phenoxides) have a weak, and synthetically useless, directing effect , but the alkoxides of benzylic alcohols can be useful as lithiation directors (see below) , especially when assisted by a second director (Scheme 74) . 

To produce a monodomain with respect to the orientation of aU three molecular axes, an additional orientation step is required. If the elastomer is prepared by orienting the major director of a photocrosslinkable polymer in an electric field, one could think about simultaneously orienting the second director by surface effects, e.g., with a rubbed Pl-stuface. For orientation by biaxial desweUing an Sa elastomer, an additional crosslinking step tmder uniaxial strain on the not yet completely crosslinked elastomer could also lead to the orientation of the minor director. 

Kini [315, 316] and Fel [317] have discussed the influence of elastic constants of biaxial nematics in several experimental situations. They examined the feasibility of their experimental determinations by means of the simultaneous application of electric and magnetic fields in different geometries. Until now, however, no measurements have been reported that go beyond uniaxial elastic theory that is, there has yet to be an experimental demonstration of elastic deformations connected with the second director in biaxial nematics. 

This transition is usually second order [18,19 and 20]. The SmC phase differs from the SmA phase by a tilt of the director with respect to the layers. Thus, an appropriate order parameter contains the polar (0) and azimuthal ((]i) angles of the director ...

If you believe the myth, you are going to work hard to cram your essay full of evidence of all the wonderful things you do. This method won t succeed for two important reasons. First, the myth is just that, a myth. Admissions directors aren t looking for students who can do it all. Second, you have only got about 500 words. You can t possibly write a great personal essay in that space if you load it up with too much content. Think small. Write about something you are truly interested in or passionate about. Resist the temptation to wow them with too much.
