Sea Star Accident

This accident occurred on December 19, 1972 when a South Korean oil tanker named Sea Star collided with the Brazilian oil tanker called Horta Barbosa in the Gulf of Oman [3,5,6]. Sea Star was on voyage from Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Both tankers caught fire but while the fire on Horta Barbosa was extinguished within a day. Sea Star continued to burn and experienced a number of explosions. [Pg.94]

Five days after the collision. Sea Star sank. The accident resulted in the death of 12 crew members and the spillage of around 115,000 tons of crude oil [5]. [Pg.94]
