Scymnus borealis

Scynmol, a polyhydroxylated cholestane sterol of the bile alcohol class, isolated from the Arctic shark, Scymnus borealis, is one of the few new metabolites described from Arctic species. It is quite similar to ciprinol, however, isolated from the freshwater carp, Cyprinus carpio (Scheuer 1973). [Pg.59]

Discovered in 1898 by the Danish scientist 0. Hammersten in the liver oil of the polar shark Scymnus borealis. [Pg.59]

Scymnol was discovered in the liver oil of the polar shark Scymnus borealis by Hammersten in 1898, but its structure was not established rmtil 1961. The story of this discovery is described by Sdieuer (1973, pp. 66-68) and Schmitz (1978, pp. 259-260). Scymnol and its sulfated derivatives were formd later in Rhizoprionodon acutus (Ishida et al., 1988,1991,1992) and in the ray Raja erinacea (Karlaganis et al, 1989). [Pg.885]
