Kane, R.A and Rollinson, D. (1994) Repetitive sequences in the ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer of Schistosoma haematobium, Schistosoma intercalatum and Schistosoma matthei. Molecular and Biochemical Parasitology 63, 153—156. [Pg.85]

Fig. 4.2. Schematic diagram of the components of the IGSs for three species of Schistosoma, after Kane and Rollinson (1998). Major repeats are shown as open boxes, with an arrowhead indicating whether each is direct or inverted. Repeats coded by the same letter are similar in sequence. The AT rich region (present in Schistosoma intercalatum and S. haematobium) is shown as a filled box. Breaks in the horizontal line indicate large alignment gaps. Fig. 4.2. Schistosomiasis is a major helminth disease of man caused by the invasion of the blood circulatory system by four species of blood flukes, viz. Schistosoma haematobium, S. mansoni, S. japonicum and S. intercalatum. The adult worms of human schistosomes have separate sexes but they are dioecious (existing together as males and females). The male worm has a groove (gynecophoral canal) along its ventral side in which it carries the female worm during most of its life span. [Pg.12]

S. japonicum, and Schistosoma mansoni. Two other species, more localized geographically, are Schistosoma mekongi and S, intercalatum. [Pg.504]
