To date, the only organometallic lanthanide porphyrin complexes to be reported contain yttrium and lutetium, and they will be considered in the section on scandium. Representative structural types of porphyrin complexes containing groups 3 and 4 metals are shown in Fig. 3 and selected data for all the structurally characterized complexes are given in Table 11. 

Sc(OEP)C>2CMe is 0.4 s, which is the longest for any porphyrin, while the fluorescent yield of 0.2 is very high. The radiative properties are explained in terms of covalent interactions between the metal and the ring as modified by the probable location of the metal ion above the porphyrin plane.24 Scandium OEP complexes are reduced to the a, y-dihydro derivatives on reduction with sodium anthracenide and methanol.25 The redox potentials of Sc(OEP)OH have been determined by cyclic voltammetry to be ligand oxidation in PrCN, 1.03 and 0.70 ligand reduction in DMSO, —1.54 (Ey2 values in V vs. SCE) no metal redox wave was observed.26... 

Relatively few complexes of N-donor ligands are known. One of the best characterized is with the tridentate ligand terpyridyl, which reacts with scandium nitrate to form Sc(terpy )(N03 )s here scandium is connected to 9 atoms, but one Sc-O bond is considerably longer than the others, so a coordination number of 8.5 has been assigned. A range of porphyrin and phthalocyanine complexes exist syntheses often involve the high-temperature routes typical of the transition metals but recently a high-yield low-temperature route has been utilized to make octaethylporphyrin (OEP) complexes ... 

Porphyrins, hydroporphyrins, azaporphyrins, phthalocyanines, corroles, corrins, and related macrocycles were discussed in CCC (1987).144 The octaethylporphyrin complexes of scandium were also previously mentioned in CCC (1987).1 The octaethylporphyrin (oep) scandium chloride complex (oep)ScCl, prepared by the reaction of the dilithium porphyrin with ScCl3(thf)3, has proved... 

The first molecular structure of half-sandwich lanthanide porphyrins was reported by Schaverien and Orpen (1991). The lutetium alkyl complex Lu(OEP)[CH(SiMc3)2] has a structure resembling that of the scandium analog (Arnold et al. 1993), exhibiting a square pyramidal geometry. The five-coordinated lutetiiun atom lies 0.918 A above the N4 plane, and the porphyrin ring also displays a saucer shape.
