Saturated fatty acids apolipoproteins

In the intestinal cell, several enzymes can act on free but not esterified fatty acids. For instance, FFA can be activated, oxidized, elongated, and desaturated. Conversion of saturated fatty acids into monounsaturates when they are absorbed as FFA, i.e., when they were present in the outer position of the dietary TG, could contribute to their lower hypercholes-terolemic effect than when originally present at the inner position. FFA can also affect intestinal gene expression and the production of apolipoproteins, and these effects are fatty acid dependent (27). [Pg.69]
