Ni-cermet type anodes have been improved by substituting the YSZ by ceria, gadolinium-doped ceria (GDC) and samarium-doped ceria (SDC). Ceria seems to increase the catalytic activity of the cermet for hydrogen oxidation, while SDC and GDC improve the ionic conductivity of the anode. It is interesting to see the work by Matsuzaki and Yasuda [18], who investigated Cr poisoning using different combinations of electrolyte and cathodes as electrolyte, they selected YSZ and samarium-doped ceria (SDC), and LSM and LSCF were selected as cathodes. It is well known that the ionic conductivity of aliovalent-doped ceria solutions show a maximum at a certain dopant concentration and cation radius. Compared to divalent cation doping, however, trivalent dopants are observed to contribute higher conductivity values in ceria. Among trivalent rare earth metals, samarium and gadolinium are accepted as the most effective dopants. Therefore, we have selected a cermet made up of nickel and 20 at% samarium-doped ceria (SDC) as the anode material in our standard cells [12-14]. [Pg.185]
