Plans were annoimced in 1997 by the Indian National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) for installation of a 1-MWe floating OTEC plant at a site near Tuticorin, South India. The project is being conducted jointly with a team from Saga University in Japan, headed by Professor Uehara. Operation of the 1-MWe demonstration vessel was scheduled to begin in 2001.

In the past, the electrolyte has been basically considered to be a transporter of lithium ions. Now, the various functional electrolytes have been developed in order to produce a specific benefit in order to improve the battery performance. The initiation of the research on functional electrolytes was based on the suggestion of Prof. Masaki Yoshio of Saga University in 1992. Shafiq Alam is an Associate Professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada. In 1998, he received his Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering from Saga University, Japan. From 1999-2001, he was appointed as a post-doctoral research fellow at the University of British Columbia and the University of Toronto, Canada.
