S-acetyl group

Creighton and Owen generated the mercaptide ion by treatment of an (S-acetyl group with base, in the conversions of the thiolacetates (266), (269), and (271) into their respective episulfides (267), (270), and (273). [Pg.156]

An enzymatic assay can also be used for detecting anatoxin-a(s). " This toxin inhibits acetylcholinesterase, which can be measured by a colorimetric reaction, i.e. reaction of the acetyl group, liberated enzymatically from acetylcholine, with dithiobisnitrobenzoic acid. The assay is performed in microtitre plates, and the presence of toxin detected by a reduction in absorbance at 410 nm when read in a plate reader in kinetic mode over a 5 minute period. The assay is not specific for anatoxin-a(s) since it responds to other acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, e.g. organophosphoriis pesticides, and would need to be followed by confirmatory tests for the cyanobacterial toxin. [Pg.117]

Two disadvantages are associated with the use of S-acetyl or 5-benzoyl derivatives in peptide syntheses (a) base-catalyzed hydrolysis of 5-acetyl- and 5-benzoylcys-teine occurs with /S-elimination to give olefinic side products, CH2=C-(NHPG)CO—(b) the yields of peptides formed by coupling an unprotected amino group in an 5-acylcysteine are low because of prior S-N acyl migration. ... [Pg.298]

The ability to promote /S elimination and the electron-donor capacity of the /3-metalloid substituents can be exploited in a very useful way in synthetic chemistry. Vinylstannanes and vinylsilanes react readily with electrophiles. The resulting intermediates then undergo elimination of the stannyl or silyl substituent, so that the net effect is replacement of the stannyl or silyl group by the electrophile. An example is the replacement of a trimethylsilyl substituent by an acetyl group by reaction with acetyl chloride. [Pg.396]

Ceftiofur (57) differs from the preceding cephalosporin derivatives in that it ha.s a thioester moiety at C-3. This can be introduced by displacement of the C-3 acetyl group of 7-aminocepha-losporanic acid (40) with hydrogen sulfide and esterification with 2-furylcarboxylic acid to give synthon 5reacted with trimethylsilylated oximinoether derivative 55 (itself obtained from the corresponding acid by reaction with dicyclohexylcarbodiimide and 1-hydroxy-benzotriazole) to produce, after deprotecting, ceftiofur (57) [18]. [Pg.187]

Heating is continued for another 5 hours and the reaction mixture is concentrated after 50 cc of water have been added. The residue is taken up in 40 cc of benzene and the benzene layer washed with 10 cc of water. After having been concentrated, the residue, crude S-methylsulfinyl-IO-acetyl phenothiazine, is dissolved in 55 cc of a 90% methanol solution for splitting off the acetyl group and, after 2.9 g of potassium carbonate have been added, it is boiled for 2 hours under reflux on an oil bath kept at a temperature of 120°C. After concentration, the residue Is taken up in 50 cc of chloroform, the chloroform layer Is washed with a total of 25 cc of water, dried over potassium carbonate, filtered and concentrated. After twice crystallizing the residue, each time from 50 cc of ethanol, analytically pure 3-methylsulfinyl phenothiazine (MP 193° to 195°C) is obtained. [Pg.952]

When it s necessary to refer to the R-C=0 as a substituent, the name acyl (a-sil) group is used and the name ending -yl is attached. Thus, CFI3CO is an acetyl group, CHO is a formyl group, and C6H5CO is a benzoyl group. [Pg.697]

Enzymes work by bringing reactant molecules together, holding them, in the orientation necessary for reaction, and providing any necessary acidic or basic sites to catalyze specific steps. As an example, let s look at citrate synthase, an enzyme that catalyzes the aldol-like addition of acetyl CoA to oxaloacetate to give citrate. The reaction is the first step in the citric acid cycle, in which acetyl groups produced by degradation of food molecules are metabolized to yield C02 and H20. We ll look at the details of the citric acid cycle in Section 29.7. [Pg.1043]

Conduritols and inositols are cyclic polyalcohols with significant biological activity. The presence of four stereogenic centers in the stmcture of conduritols allows the existence of 10 stereoisomers. Enzymatic methods have been reported for the resolution of racemic mixtures or the desymmetrization of meso-conduritols. For example, Mucor miehei lipase (MML) showed enantiomeric discrimination between all-(R) and all-(S) stereoisomers ofconduritol E tetraacetate (Figure 6.52). Alcoholysis resulted in the removal of the four acetyl groups ofthe all-(R) enantiomer whereas the all-(S) enantiomer was recovered [141]. [Pg.153]

Manufacturing processes for cephalosporin C and benzylpenicilhn are broadly similar. In common with mai other antibiotic fermentations, no specific precursor feed is necessary for cephalosporin C. There is sufficient acetyl group substrate for the terminal acetyltransferase reaction available fiom the organism s metabolic pool. [Pg.160]
