Rydberg states multichannel quantum defect theory

Vibrational autoionization corresponds to an exchange between the kinetic energy of the ejected electron and the vibrational energy of the core ion. This process occurs because the potential curves of the ion and Rydberg states are slightly different. Eq. (8.6.7) can be derived from a more sophisticated model using multichannel quantum defect theory (Raoult and Jungen, 1981). 

In the following the resonance in singlet-triplet mixing of 6snd D2 Rydberg states of Ba will be described quantitatively within a three-channel quantum defect model. Multichannel quantum defect theory provides a description of entire (interacting) Rydberg series in terms of a number of semiempirical parameters. 

Much effort has been invested to obtain a complete understanding of the detailed structure of Rydberg states of alkaline-earth atoms. In parallel to the experimental mapping of states went a successful parametrization of the observed spectra by the Multichannel Quantum Defect Theory (MQDT).
