This combination principle must of course hold in all cases, and is a deduction from the theory which can easily be put to the test of experiment. Historically, it is true, the order of these two aspects of the matter was reversed for Ritz, eight years before Bohr s theory was propounded, deduced this combination principle from collected spectroscopic material whicli had been obtained by experiment. It is by no means the case, however, that all possible combination lines do actually occur with perceptible intensity.
