Rhodium-Catalyzed Direct Arylations of Arenes

This problem was addressed independently by Oi, Inoue and coworkers [19], as well as by Bedford and colleagues [20], through the use of economical (but toxic) P(NMe2)3 as cocatalyst Thus, a catalytic system consisting of [RhCl(cod)]2 and P(NMe2)3 proved complementary to the previously reported phosphinite-based 

Notably, an independently synthesized air-stable rhodium complex derived from preligand 24 was shown to be catalytically competent furthermore, spectroscopic data indicated the formahon of complex 28. Therefore, a mechanism was proposed that proceeded via an in situ generation of the corresponding phosphinite, with subsequent cyclometallation.
