The PFR has been observed in compounds with pharmacological activity possessing aromatic ester or amide moieties. Benorylate, employed in rheumatoid arthritis therapy, is obtained by esterification of paracetamol with aspirin. Its irradiation leads to PFR with initial cleavage of the central C—O bond to yield 5-acetamido-2 -acetoxy-2-hydroxybenzophenone, which undo-goes transacetylation to 5 -acetamido-2 -acetoxy-2-hydroxybenzophenone (Scheme 31.19) [180]. [Pg.902]
