In order to report the correct number of significant figures in a measurement, an estimate of the uncertainties is obviously required. Sometimes this will be nothing more than an informed guess of the likely effect of random errors. In more sophisticated measurements, further experiments may need to be carried out in order to assess the importance of both random and systematic errors. [Pg.10]
