Relationships and concepts

Many of the fundamental relationships and concepts governing the electrical properties of materials have been introduced in the previous section. In this section, we elaborate upon those topics that are more prevalent or technologically relevant in ceramics and glasses than in metals, such as electrical insulation and superconductivity, and introduce some topics that were omitted in Section 6.1.1, such as dielectric properties. 

Both engineering jargon and miners vernacular expressions serve different purposes as warrants for risk decisions. The point is not that miners vernacular expressions are better or more accurate representations of risk. Rather, we must pay attention to the relationships and concepts that are lost in the rhetorical transformation from one set of terms to another. 

Information retrieval systems traditionally rely on textual keywords to index and retrieve documents. Keyword-based retrieval may return inaccurate and incomplete results when different keywords are used to describe the same concept in the documents and in the queries. Furthermore, the relationship between those related keywords may be semantic rather than syntactic, and capturing it thus requires access to comprehensive human world knowledge. Previous approaches have attempted to tackle these difficulties by using manually built thesauri, by relying on term co-occurrence data, or by extracting latent word relationships and concepts from a corpus.
