Dr. S. T. Reid has contributed the first of two sections on photochemistry of heterocycles, the present one dealing with that of /V-heterocycles. This updates part of his own earlier review The Photochemistry of Heterocycles published in 1970 in Volume 11. A further contribution, which will extend the updating to O- and 5-heterocycles, should be published shortly. Dr. A. B. Hornfeldt s review, entitled Selenophenes, also deals with a subject that was previously reviewed in Volume 12 of this series by N. N. Magdesieva. 

This, the eleventh volume of Advances in Heterocyclic Chemistry, includes surveys of the chemistry of the following groups of heterocyclic compounds benzo[6]thiophenes (B. Iddon and ft. M. Scrow-ston), naphthyridines (W. W. Paudler and T. J. Kress), and quinu-clidines (L, N. Yakhontov). In addition, R. A. Jones covers the application of physical methods to pyrrole chemistry and a very topical subject, the photochemistry of heterocycles, is reviewed by S. T. Reid. 

Recent advances in the photochemistry of nitrogen-containing heterocycles have been reviewed in Volume 30 of this series. This review is intended to update an earlier review on the photochemistry of heterocycles2 with S. T. Reid, Adc. Heterocycl. Clwm. 30, 239 (1982).
