Reducing the Effect of Longitudinal Diffusion

Molecules tend to diffuse randomly, in no particular direction, within any fluid, independently of the flow rate of the mobile phase. Their diffusion rate is determined by the type of molecule, the nature of the mobile phase, and the temperature, and is expressed quantitatively by their diffusion constants. [Pg.103]

Molecular diffusion is related to time, as shown by the Einstein equation  [Pg.103]

The Hl value is reduced by an increase in the viscosity of the solvent or by a decrease in the temperature. Longitudinal diffusion can thus be reduced by decreasing the diffusion coefficient and increasing the flow rate however, these two actions are counter-effective in liquid chromatography because of the mass transport term. [Pg.103]
