REDEFINING YOUR ROLE AS A PARENT

How can you get the most out of retirement and still be the kind of parent you should be How can you make the transition and maintain excellent relationships with your children Here are some thoughts that may or may not apply (or appeal) to you. Check those that do. 

I I Do not subordinate yourself to the needs of your children. Consider yourself first. It is your turn now. 

I I Generate activities away from your adult children. Demonstrate that you are in charge and want to live your own life. Be with your children when you want to be with them. 

I I Give your children the freedom to live their own lives. Refrain from intervention. If you give too much, it can be awkward for them—especially if there are strings attached, real or implied. Give them the privilege of handling their own problems. 

I I If your children ask for more help than they should, learn to say no in a loving but firm way. The reward-reversal process will not start until this happens.
