10 cm at 1 MeV is too small for investigation in the laboratory although it is large enough to make the reaction important astrophysically (Salpeter ). The state of the deuteron is not bound, and attempts to excite it by inelastic scattering always lead to disintegration of the deuteron, as shown in the reaction pn) 2 H.
