Reaction of carbonyl groups with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine

Both ketone (CO) and aldehyde (CHO) groups present in polymer films react with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (10.18) according to the reaction [22, 927, 1911]  

Polymer film samples can be treated in the following ways  

Immersed directly in 10%v/v solution of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine in acetonitrile for 6-10 hours. 

After washing and drying it in a nitrogen atmosphere, the sample treated with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine shows characteristic changes in the IR absorption spectra (Fig. 10.64).
