The sugar derivatives which are appropriate for use in synthesis must either be available commercially or be prepared readily from cheap precursors. Apart from the usual chemical suppliers, Pfanstiehl (Waukegan, Illinois, U.S.A.) and Raylo (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) carry excellent stocks of sugars and their derivatives. Many of the latter can frequently be prepared rapidly and economically, and for this purpose the series Methods in Carbohydrate Chemistry (Academic Press), particularly volumes 1,2 and 6, is unsurpassed. [Pg.3]
