Rayleighs Principle

Use of the Rayleigh Principle. The present method can be combined with the principle developed in Sec. 9-6, namely, that an approximate... [Pg.319]

The force Rayleigh scattering method was developed by Nagashima s group. Thermal diffusivity can be measured in a contact-free manner within a time interval of 1 ms, with a small temperature rise of 0.1 K and with a small volinne of about 10 mm The sample needs to be colored by an admixture of a dye for suitable absorption of a heating laser beam. The principle is schematically shown in Fig. 32. Two beams of equal intensity divided by means of abeam splitter cross in the sample to create... [Pg.188]

HF (HF) theory is based on the idea that one takes an antisymmetrized product wavefunction and uses the variational principle to obtain the best possible approximation to the A -particle wavefunction that cannot be represented by such a single determinant. Thus, one inserts the single determinant into the Rayleigh-Ritz functional and performs a constraint variation of the orbitals. The results of the variational process are the famous HF equations that are satisfied by each of the orbitals ... [Pg.140]

Abstract. An application of the Rayleigh-Ritz variational method to solving the Dirac-Coulomb equation, although resulted in many successful implementations, is far from being trivial and there are still many unresolved questions. Usually, the variational principle is applied to this equation in the standard, Dirac-Pauli, representation. All observables derived from the Dirac equation are invariant with respect to the choice of the representation (i.e. to a similarity transformation in the four-dimensional spinor space). However, in order to control the behavior of the variational energy, the trial functions are subjected to several conditions, as for example the kinetic balance condition. These conditions are usually representation-dependent. The aim of this work is an analysis of some consequences of this dependence. [Pg.217]

This transparent and easy example clearly shows how dimensional analysis deals with specific problems and what conclusions it allows. It should now be easier to understand Lord Rayleigh s sarcastic comment with which he began his short essay on The Principle of Similitude (3) ... [Pg.7]

Until the advent of superresolution microscopes the only way to observe the minute world was based on the common Fourier-type microscopes. The maximum theoretical resolution limit for these apparatuses was established by Abbe, applying the Rayleigh-Fourier diffraction resolution rule [28]. The basic principle underlying the operational working of these ordinary microscopes is, in the eyes of Niels Bohr, a textbook example of Heisenberg uncertainty relations. [Pg.548]
